The bass line in hip-hop music is contagious, you can’t miss its infectious beats and to hear talented rappers spit rapid-fire thought-provoking words of rhyme over the music. On occasions, hip-hop music is interspersed with the scratching of the turntables by a DJ.
Hip-hop music emerged in the 1970s out of New York City by African Americans and Latinos, in an era when graffiti and break dancing was the norm.
At the time, Hip-hop proved to be a much welcome change to funk and disco music, which permeate the airwaves then.
However, homage must be paid to the Jamaican immigrants who brought the dub style of music to New York City. Hip-hop owes a lot to this genre of music since they have a few similarities.
Dub music featured chanting against background music, which were often filled and mixed with samples of other popular songs. The pioneer who made the transition from dub music to that of hip-hop is a man by the name of DJ Kool Herc.
As the story goes, Herc who was a popular deejay in the 1970s in New York would often play reggae music for the crowd at parties. Since Americans were not too keen on this brand of music, he quickly switched it to both funk rock and disco genres. He brilliantly enhanced the short percussive breaks by extending them to include a mix of other music. This was achieved by using two records and an audio mixer. This skillful way of playing music was soon interspersed with scratching the records to make an even more interesting sound.
The result of this creative way of playing music gave way to song remixes, which we are familiar with today. Samples of songs from other artists were also blended in with these tracks as well.
Hip Hop’s official launch into the country’s mainstream occurred in 1979 before and it rapidly spread worldwide.
The style of hip-hop music can feature a rapper rhyming over a beat or it can be done in a cappella style as well as with a live band over a four-beat track.
Eventually east coast and west coast hip-hop was introduced to music lovers. The East Coast brand of hip-hop music was introduced in the 1980s in New York. Wu-Tang Klan and rapper Jay Z are both artists from a long list of those from the East Coast.
West Coast hip-hop on the other hand was also introduced in the 1980s by rappers from California, which included Dr. Dre , and Snoop Doggy Dogg. To date, West Coast rappers sell more CDs and have a steadier fan base than that of the East coast rappers
