The combined star power of rapper Jay-Z and pop singer Kelly Clarkson failed to prove a big enough draw at a recent concert at Arizona Stadium, where the student organization who booked them lost almost $1 Million.
The concert, billed as the "Last Smash Platinum Bash," (creative!) was organized and promoted by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, who allegedly paid Hova $750,000 to co-headline (where did they think they were? Dubai?). The stadium hasn't had a concert in 32 years.
In a stunning move of strategic brilliance, the student organization then gave away over 4,000 tickets to the show, to somehow entice marketing deals with the local radio stations and newspapers. Unfortunately, this move failed to bring in enough marketing money to cover their losses, said ASUA president Tommy Bruce. "Nobody predicted the economy would be the way it is now, last May," Bruce explained, in a statement to the Arizona Daily Star.
The promoters confirmed that the event lost $917,000.
Jay's upcoming album 'Blueprint 3' is supposedly scheduled for September 2009. Perhaps the ASUA will give away free copies of that, too.
