Both regions of the country have their own complement of rap music artists, or “rappers”. Some of the more famous ones on the East Coast include such “veterans” as Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Run-D.M.C., and others. Hot on their heels, keeping the unique East Coast rap sound alive are such artists as Nas,
50 Cent and Talib Kweli.
All these rappers—“old” and new—carry on the tradition of producing rap music that has a hard edge to its beat and a style of rhyming that is comes across as less flexible, thus giving the songs a unique style that is strictly East Coast.
West Coast rap music, on the other hand, is very different from East Coast rap music. West Coast rappers go for a “smoother” type of rap, in terms of beat, rhythm, and word rhyming. But, much of the subject matter addressed is West Coast rap centers around the “gangsta” or “g-funk” image and lifestyle.
The West Coast has such personalities as Ice Cube, The Game, Tupac Shakur, and Tha Dogg Pound, featuring Snoop Dog. And, of course, there is Dr. Dre (real name Andre Romelle Young).
Born February 18, 1965, in Compton, California, Dr. Dre first began performing with the rap group World Class Wreckin’ Cru. His claim to fame, however, came when he joined the rap group N.W.A. He continued to achieve success, both in the recording studio and as a producer for other well-known artists such as Snoop Dogg and
Mary J. Blige.
Dr. Dre has since focused most of his time and efforts to the production end of rap music. However, fans of Dr. Dre’s will be pleased to know that he plans to release his final album, titled Detox sometime in 2008.
So, which coast really does have the better rappers? Well, that’s almost like asking which flavor of ice cream you prefer—chocolate or vanilla. It’s a personal preference
