I've used AudioCity which was free in the past but I think you have to pay for it now. It was a pretty good tool; limited, but had enough to meet your basic needs.

If you are a newbie then I would go with fruityloops. Thats what all the amatuers start with. You can try Reason to, thats a cool software.

Reason sucks major. Stick with what the industry is doing. Right now Pro tool is the business. I advise you to take a class for it though, so yu can get the most out of it.

Protools/acid/fruityloops/cubase/ are good programs for music...

Actually DJ Khalil makes all his beats with Reason and was signed to Aftermath as a producer and is the main producer on Dr. Dre's Detox. Many other producers in the industry use Reason as well. I personally love it & have made some of the best beats of my life with it.

PS... i used to use Acid and moved to Protools. but have found that i get better beats from Reason. I then load rewire it to Protools to add vocals and for mixing/mastering. This is what many major producers are doing.

This is what many major producers are doing. co-sign +1 I know alot of people who stay away from reason because it's difficult to setup. I started the same as you from acid to protools but I still use acid/vegas, I just can't put it down. ;D
